Grand Teton National Park

Grand Teton National Park is one of the most stunningly beautiful sights that I have ever seen. My first view of the Grand Tetons was a jaw-dropping experience. Pictures cannot accurately convey how majestic these peaks are.

We were able to spend 4 days camping and sightseeing in GTNP. If you are not into back country hiking, I think that is more than enough time. We stayed in our 5th wheel trailer at Colter Bay RV Park. This is a huge RV park on the shores of Jackson Lake. It is a popular spot, and we made our reservations as soon as the reservation window opened 6 months ahead. It is nice to be able to stay inside the park as it makes it more convenient for sightseeing. Colter Bay Village has many conveniences including a fuel station, grocery store, lodging and restaurants. There is a park visitor center where you can find information about local trails and boat rentals on Jackson Lake.

Driving the roads through the park is easy and there are several pull outs to stop and enjoy the views. On our first full day in the park, we drove the Teton park road and the Jenny Lake loop. This route offers several views of the mountain peaks. We stopped at every available pull out we could find to appreciate the view from different perspectives. If you are looking for a great spot to grab a drink or a bite to eat, the Jackson Lake Lodge is worth a stop. The views from the lounge and the deck are amazing.

On another day in the park, we drove the main highway through the park and explored the loop from Gros Ventre campground to Antelope Flats Road. We had been told that this area was a good place for a moose sighting. Sure enough, as we were driving Antelope Flats Road, we came across 3 moose feeding down in a gully.

Wildlife is abundant in GTNP. During our short stay we spied moose, bison, brown bear, and grizzly bear. One thing we learned is that if you see several cars and/or a park ranger vehicle pulled over by the side of the road, then there is a good chance they are observing wildlife. The rangers keep well informed about wildlife sightings and are present to keep visitors safe. They will also give you tips on where you are most likely to see certain wildlife.

Grand Teton NP is located close enough to Yellowstone National Park that you can make that a day trip if you like. There is too much to see in Yellowstone for one day trip, but you can explore the south end of the park. Another easy day trip from Grand Teton is the town of Jackson WY. Jackson has several galleries, shops and restaurants surrounding a town square. We spent a rainy afternoon browsing through the shops and galleries in Jackson followed by lunch at one of the local restaurants.

Many visitors find lodging in Jackson when visiting Grand Teton National Park. If you can find lodging in the park, I think that is preferable. It is much easier to get an early start for wildlife viewing if you are staying in the park.
